Committees of Annapolis Local

The Annapolis Local has several committees that support the work of the Local and the professional interests of its members.


Economic Welfare Committee

The Economic Welfare Committee supports members on matters related to working conditions, professional rights and responsibilities, and Regional and Provincial negotiations.

Responsibilities

Chair: Vice-President, Economic Welfare

Committee members are responsible for:

  • Seeking input from Local members regarding Regional and Provincial bargaining priorities and asking packages.
  • Consulting with the Professional Development Committee regarding the provision and use of:
    • Conference Grants
    • Professional Development Grants
    • Educational Leave Plans
    • Sabbaticals
    • In-Service opportunities
  • Promoting teachers' rights and responsibilities.
  • Planning and promoting improvements to working conditions for Local members.
  • Disseminating information regarding Regional and Provincial negotiations and the ratification of tentative agreements.

Resolutions Committee

The Resolutions Committee supports Local members in developing resolutions for consideration at Annual Council and coordinates the Local's participation in the resolutions process.

Responsibilities

Chair: Past President

Committee members are responsible for:

  • Calling for resolutions and informing members of relevant timelines.
  • Assisting members with the preparation of resolutions and accompanying briefs.
  • Submitting approved resolutions to Annual Council.
  • Organizing the Local's delegation to Annual Council.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee develops the Annapolis Local's operating budget for the upcoming year and provides financial input on matters affecting the Local.

Responsibilities

Chair: Local Treasurer

Committee members are responsible for:

  • Developing the Local's annual operating budget.
  • Reviewing and making recommendations regarding Local expenditures.
  • Providing input, as needed, on scholarship criteria and other financial decisions.
  • Supporting sound financial planning for the Local.

Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee supports professional learning opportunities for Annapolis Local members and makes decisions regarding Local Professional Development Grants.

Responsibilities

Chair: Vice-President, Professional Development

The committee:

  • Reviews and awards Annapolis Local Professional Development Grants.
  • Organizes and provides professional development opportunities for Local members.
  • Promotes professional learning that supports the needs and interests of teachers.
  • Supports equity initiatives within the Local.

Equity

The Professional Development Committee is also responsible for promoting awareness of equity issues. Activities may include:

  • Offering professional development sessions.
  • Purchasing materials and resources for schools.
  • Assisting teachers with equity-related issues.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee promotes the work and image of the Annapolis Local and communicates information about Local activities and initiatives to the broader community.

Responsibilities

Chair: Vice-President, Communications

Committee members are responsible for:

  • Contacting local media when appropriate.
  • Promoting a positive image of teachers through publicity about programs and initiatives of local interest.
  • Supporting communications that highlight the work and contributions of Annapolis Local members.

Public Affairs Committee

The Public Affairs Committee monitors developments that may affect Local members and supports the Local's political awareness and engagement.

Responsibilities

Chair: Vice-President, Communications

Committee members are responsible for:

  • Monitoring school board meetings and attending them where possible.
  • Staying informed about the local political climate and issues affecting education.
  • Supporting political awareness and strategies within the Local.
  • Helping members understand issues that may affect public education and the teaching profession.

Local Events

The Public Affairs Committee also coordinates social events sponsored by the Annapolis Local, including:

  • Annual Retirement Banquet
  • 25-Year Teacher Event
  • Welcome Back Event
